Library Media Services

The Rockville High School library is open from 7:00am to 3:00pm

Services

The Rockville High School Library Media Center provides a place for students to go to do research, study quietly, read current newspapers or magazines, or use computers. We have Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and other software applications available.

The library is open before and after the academic day in order to provide access to students who don't have a study hall or who don't have time to get to the library during the school day.

Sometimes coaches come with their teams to study, taking advantage of the time between the end of the academic day and the start of practice.

Check the link to the RHS Library Card catalog/InfoCentre Library Catalog links and it should indicate if a book is in or checked out of the library. If you click all the way to see the individual book record online. you can email the Library to get the book put on reserve.

Library Computers

The library has networked computers for academic use. There are a variety of platforms available to be used for word processing and research. The library tries to maintain compatibility with word processing programs that students may have at home. To access work from home, students should save work on a disk or memory stick. (It is also a good idea to save a backup file in TXT format.)

Resources

The library has acquired paid online research database services which require a specific login or an ID and password. Students can get a bookmark with the IDs and passwords from the library.

Connecticut Digital Library

Any student can use the http://www.iconn.org/ website from school or home.  This site provides magazine and authoritative resources.  If accessing from home, type in your public library card barcode to gain access.

Class Multimedia Equipment

The library has available for students, staff members, or guest speakersthe following multimedia equipment:

SMARTBOARD, digital cameras, LCD computer projector, large-screen TV, or laptop computers

Make reservations a week or more in advance if possible, but a minimum two day's notice is required.

Overdue Materials

Any materials that are needed for longer periods than normally allowed should be renewed before they are due. If books or magazines should be overdue, the library will send a notice to the student's block 1 class notifying the student of the overdue item. There is a 5-cent-per-day fine.

If a book or other item is lost, the student is responsible for notifying the library as soon as possible. The student is obligated to replace the lost title plus a $2 fine.

At the end of each marking period, the library will send a letter home to ask for the assistance of the parent/guardian in finding and returning any overdue materials or taking care of any outstanding fines or bills for lost materials. (Students have usually been notified several times by the time a letter goes home.)

The school house offices will hold records at the ends of semesters and upon graduation if there are any outstanding fines or lost items which haven't been returned or paid for.

Alphasmart Keyboards

The ALPHASMART Loan Program is an effort to allow students or staff who do not have access to a computer at home to be able to word process and be able to complete assignments.

The Library Media Center has two ALPHASMART keyboards for loan available for students and staff. The keyboards are lightweight and available on an overnight basis. They can hold up to 8 files which can total about 100 pages of text. The ALPHASMART word-processed document can be loaded into a word processor on a library computer for editing, further word processing, formatting, or printed directly to a printer. See the media specialist for more information.
