Formatting Documents for School,
College, and Beyond

By Mr. Bittner

Our office applications classes at Rockville High School are designed to show acceptable formatting standards.  There is no one correct way to format a document. Different teachers, professors, or office managers have their own styles they will expect you to follow.  It is important then, that you know how to use your computer's software to help you format in a variety of styles.

Here are links to an assortment of examples of standard documents you may be asked to format in school or when writing letters to apply for a job.  Feel free to download the examples and use them for reference when you need to turn in an assignment.

  1. All about Academic Reports

  2. Business lettersBlock style with parts of a letter labeled

  3. Creating OutlinesOrganize your thoughts with an outline before writing that report or creating a PowerPoint presentation.

  4. Suggestions for formatting professional looking tables.

Citing Research Papers.  One of the topics covered in information processing is properly citing references used for research papers.  You should have a pretty good idea of how to use MLA and APA guidelines.  Some Web sites have interactive capabilities to help you properly format citations.

Visit the Neuva site for MLA Bibliographic Format.  This will get you started, but your teacher/professor always has the last word and you are expected to meet his or her standards!
